The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Co., report on November 6 as follows: — The full average quantities of meat being pitched at Smithfield have proved in excess of the requirements of the market, while the depression in the general trade of the country has tended to restrict the demand in the provinces. It is not surprising therefore that prices have developed a further tendency in favour of buyers, without giving any stimulus to the output. Mutton and Lambs have suffered considerably from the abundant sup. I>lies of both from Scotland and Holand, for which very reduced prices had to be taken in order to effect a clearance. Dutch sheep and lambs can both be bought at 5Jd per lb. Scotch Hill lambs in fair condition are selling at 6d per lb. New Zealand Mutton.—There has been no arrival during the week. It must again be stated that prices are only being maintained by virtue of stocks being in manageable compass, and there is little life in the demand. Canterburys are somewhat neglected at prices ranging from Sjd to 4}d per lb., and North Islands are unchanged at 3£d to 3gd per lb. . Ewes are in request at 3jd per lb. South American Mutton. —Arrivals have been Zennatt 28,417 carcases, Highland Glen 23,777 carcases, and Amiral Aube 10^940 carcases. Prices in this section are firmj particularly for good light sheep_ which are worth 3|d per lb. in London and slightly more in the provinces. Medium and heavy weights can be bought at 3}d per lb. Australian Mutton. —Receipts, consist of Orotava 4,060 carcases, Drayton Grange 9,237 carcases and Pericles 10;890 carcases. Quotations show nominally no change, hut buyers appear reluctant to pay 3sd per lb. for small sheep., which is their relative value. For medium weights 3jd per lb. is more readily obtained. The quality of the meat is very fair. Frozen Lambs. —There has been no arrival from New Zealand, but 11,---622 carcases from Australia and 141 carcases from South America. In the face of competition from freshkilled lambs, the demand has fallen off considerably and sales last week were very small. New Zealand quotations are fully Id per lb. cheaper, out sales are not pressed as stocks are now limited. Australian lambs are not much in evidence^ and the average quotation of 45dper lb. represents very limited business. Frozen Beef. —Stocks have been increased by 6,933 quarters from Australia and 17 800 quarters from South America. The cheap supplies of South American Chmed Beef hare interfered with the sale of frozen hinds. Prices have drooped, and the heat quarters can be bought at 3|d per lb. Forequarters still meet a fair enquiry and are firm at about 3Jd per lb.
