DETECTIVES.

■ ■ "■» — REAL AND COUNTERFEIT. SENTENCE OF TWELVE MONTHS' HARD LABOUR. Alfred Genet and Harold Williams, who impersonated Detectives Bishop and Ward on March 12, and received 8s from Marion Matthews on the strength of it, appeared before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., in the Christchurch Police Court on Saturday, charged with being rogues and vagabonds. They pleaded not guilty to the charge. It appears that the accused went to Mrs Matthews' house and enquired for a man named Mitchell. Mrs Matthews told them that no person of that name lived in the house. They then enquired for the man who drove up in a cab that morning. Mrs Matthews said that was her brother, and he was at that time in the scullery. Garnet then stated that he was Detective Bishop and Williams was Detective Ward, and they had come to arrest him for wife desertion. They wanted £5 for arrears of maintenance. Mrs Matthews invited them in, and then said that she could not pay them the amount asked" for. She. however, gavo them 8s in money and a cheque for £2. Her brother (Gordon Harvey)' came into the room and asked them to produce their warrant, and Genet, who received the money, began to edge towards the door, and at the same time commenced feeling : in his pockets, apparently for a warrant. On being remonstrated with he gave back the cheque, but retained the cash. Williams later took her ■ brother away, but when in the vicinity 1 of the Carlton Hotel, Harvey asked him to have a drink, but he declined, I and then left him. The police were informed, and the accused were sub- ' sequently arrested. j Both denied the charge, and Wil- 1 Hams stated that Harvey had invit- 3 ed him to his house to repay him 6s 5 be had borrowed from him that morn- 1 ing. ] Harvey said he did not borrow any 1 money from Williams.- He had not e leserted his wife, and had only come from Ohoka on March 12. 1 The Magistrate said it was an im- t imdent and dangerous kind of impos- r hire. The accused would be sontenc- a ?d to twelve months' imprisonment, d vith hard labour. | t ___-—- 55=_=_H \l
