The Feilding Star, Oroua and Kiwitea Counties Gazette. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23, 1908. A Cause Lacking Assistance.

Amongst tho most marked phases in : ' tho most modern civilising influences • is the effort to allay pain and to prevent cruelty. We have, as a result, a tremendous development of hospital work and organisation, the teaching ■ of first aid, the formation and buildl ing up of homes and institutions for I the neglected and the ill-used, socieI ties for the prevention of cruelty to - women and children and animals. Tho dumb animal especially calls forth the sympathy of many people, and there is scarce a centre of population in New Zealand to-day that has • not some organisation the members of which keep an eye upon the cruel user of man's most faithful help. Feilding is no more exempt from the cruel and the thoughtless than other towns, and here it has been thought to be absolutely necessary to havo in operation an active and oven aggressive Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. But such a Society is of little effect unless it has an inspector who has a real sympathy for animals and courage enough to prosecute where necessary. To pro- ' vide such a useful officer money is j needed ; and it has been with this ; highly commendable object in view that a committee of public spirited I and sympathetic ladies began the organisation of the gymkhana which is I being held on the Feilding racecourse I this afternoon and to-night. These . ladies havo spared neither time nor • trouble in their efforts to provide ; such entertainment as will make it worth while for the general publie to attend the carnival. And it is to be hoped that the public will atI tend in force, for by this means they j contribute to a good cause that needs i assistance.
