A cordial invitation for America's Pacific battleship fleet to visit any port in Japan on its homeward cruise was presented to the Hon. Mr Elihu Root, Secretary of State for the United States, on Thursday. The invitation was accepted yesterday, and the fleet is to visit Yokohama. The Hon. Mr W. H. Taft, Secretary for War, who recently went to Japan on a special mission, in speaking to. an interviewer, predicted a welcome for Admiral Evans and his ships, a reception which he was sure would surprise the pessimists. . Mr Taft added that there had been no recent addition to the programme of fortifications for the Pacific Cqast, as alleged by the alarmist press. It remains as fixed some years ago. London, March 22.
