LOCAL ENTERPRISE.

MR I. BIIKNT'S FURNITURE FACTORY. One' of the best evidences of the 2>rogress of this district is the enter- I prise displayed by old business houses in meeting the new conditions engendered by increased demand^ and outside competition, and a visit to Mr I. Brent's furnishing warehouse and factory gives ample proof of his desire to .satisfy his customers. For many years past this establishment lias possessed the reputation of being able to supply first-class furniture, but the difficulty arose of being able to meet the demand with the necessary promptitude. Mr Brent has overcome this by erecting an addition to his two-storey factory 4ft by 26ft, and installing the very latest and most powerful machinery procurable, besides obtaining the' ser- \ vices of a first-class tradesman in Mr T. Burkenshaw, of Palmerston North, to take charge of the machinery. An oight-horse power Crossley's Otto engine has been installed to drive the new machinery, which comprises a ] surfacing and thickening machine of 24in capacity, handsaw machine,- to cut to the depth of 18in., crossclt, ripping, and boring machine, shaping and moulding machine for all classes j of moulding, grooving and rabhiting, j and grindstones and emery machines. These machines, combined with the j appliances alreadj T in use, will enable the greatest demand to be satisfied promptly, and the very best class of goods to be turned out in the most finished condition. Mr Brent has a large stock of well-seasoned timber of superior quality in hand, and the machijiies are engagted |in turning this into furniture of the best pattern and the best designs. The warehouse is also stocked with a great variety of furniture, and as Mr Brent's courtesy and attention to business are proverbial, we have no doubt but that his enterprise will be well rewarded.
