THE ASSOCIATION CUP.

TAONUI-OHAKEA DEFEAT OTAKI. Considerable interest was taken in the contest at Palmerston on Saturday for the Association cup, between the Taonui-Ohakea team and one from the Otaki Club. The latter were weakened by being one lady short, and so had to forfeit one match, but from the manner in which they disposed of the Palmerston team it was thought that they would more than hold their own with the country club. It was nofc to be, however, for although Otaki, with Hartman, disposed of the first Taonui man (R. Bailey) in the men's singles, and Avon four other matches, they were defeated by 8 to 5, or leaving out the forfeited match, by 80 games to 67. The two best contests were the first men's singles and doubles. Hartman and R. Bailey had a great go, being 8 games each when Hartman got theserve and won at 40—30. The doubles was a splendid contest, Hartman and S. Simcox being 8 to R. and N. Bailey's 5 when the brothers' played for all they were worth, and won four games right off, although every point was keenly contested. The TaonuiOhakea ladies won their singles and double easily. The following were the scores, the Taonui-Ohakea players being mentioned first: — Gentlemen's singles — R. Bailey lost to Hartman, B—9; N. Bailey beat S. Simcox, 9 — 7 ; A. Campbell lost to P. Simcox, o—9;0 — 9 ; Anderson beat F. Perm, 9—3. Ladies' singles — Miss B. Bailey beat Miss Simcox, 7 — 2; Miss E. Bailey beat Miss Elder, 7—l. Gentlemen's doubles — R. and N. Bailey beat S. Simcox and Hartman, 9 — B; A. Campbell and lunes lost to P. Simcox and Bacchus, 3 — 9 ; R. and F. Anderson lost to Perm and Bright, Ladies' Doubles — Misses B. and E. Bailey beat Misses Simcox and Elder, 7—l ) Misses S. and J. Bailey won by forfeit. Mixed doubles— T. Innes and S. Bailey beat Bright and Miss Simcox, 7—2 ; F. Anderson and Miss J. Bailey lost to Bacchus and Miss Simcox, '3 —7 ■ The ladies of the Palmerston Club generously provided afternoon tea for the visitors. At the conclusion of the match, Mr Alexander Bailey, President of the winning club, thanked the members of the PaTmerston Club for their generosity in allowing the use of the courts and the ladies of the club for their kindness in entertaining the visitors. Cheers were then given for the Palmerstontans by the visitors, and Mr Pickett suitably acknowledged the compliment. It is probable a match will be played on the Palmerston courts on Saturday, 22nd instv between TaonuiOhakea and Palmerston clubs. The Taonui-Ohakea team have now to play the final off with the Wanganui Club, and their admirers con- I sider that they should be able to pull the event off.
