NOTES.
Kia Toa can thank Stalker and McMinn jfor their victory, for these two players stood out miles ahead of the rest of the team. They both kicked well, and with good judgment, and Stalker's sure taking of the ball was a tower of strength. Hodgins was not as good as usual, but he had a very heavy task for a young player. Crawford made a good half, except by comparison with Ongley. Trevena did great work for Feilding, and it would have been impossible to improve on his display. J. Price did good solid work, taking the ball well, and gaining a good deal of ground with his kicking. Pirani did all he was asked to do, but he missed Rout;, whose quick, accurate passing would have ensured a score several times, when the lack of it failed to achieve one. The forwards played their best game this season, although Watts' spoiling game at the scrum and on the line-out was missed. Williamson worked hard, but failed in these respects. Younger played a grand game, while Whisker, Ryan and Reid outshone themselves. There are still orators in the Kia Toa team, R. Waldegrave squealing for the referee every five minutes, while Webb had to be cautioned with suspension by the referee for the frequency of his appeals. The Kia Toa barrackers could not be pleased, directing all their artillery at the referee. Tndeed, one fusillade was ludicrous, for they discovered that they had been abusing the referee for giving their team a free kick. A Rugby player, well-known in the North and now resident in the West Coast was recently written to by the Builer Rugby .Union asking him why he did not attend a certain practice match? and why he did not advise the secretary of his inability to attend? "Gentlemen," he wrote in reply, ". . . . This is how I explain.: Not playing to-morrow and sending jersey." The union suspended him for three years for refusing to play in a representative match, and for sending an impertinent letter to the union. At the meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union the suspension was made general. The return match between Manawatu and Wanganui will take place at Wanganui next Saturday. Extra interest is added to this game in view of the fact that Manawatu succeeded in defeating Wanganui at Palmerston this season in the first match.
