At a Council meeting of the British Empire League, held on Mondey, in a Committee room of the House of Uonimons, Viscount Knutsford in ine chair, a resolution tvas unanimously adopted, expressing tne gratification of the Council tnat the reduction of postal rates charged on newspapers and magazines from the United Kingdom to Canada had been effected. On the motion of the Earl of Jersey, seconded by Admiral E. K. Jj'reinantle, it was agreed that the support of the League be given to the proposal to establish the best steamship service available, within reasonable- cost, connecting the United Kingdom with Canada, and then through Canada with Australia and New Zealand. Mr H. G. Denham, M.A., M.Sc, a Canterbury College graduate and an Exhibition Science scholar, at present studying at Liverpool University, has been appointed to represent Canterbury College at the centenary celebrations of the Geological Society in London at the end of September. Mr J. E. Best, of Wellington, who came over to secure a type of motorcar suitable to the New Zealand roads, has been spending much time at the motor-car factories of the Midlands, lie is accompanied by Mrs Best, and when he has completed his business in hand, they will visit Ireland and the continent, leaving on August 11th by the Schornhorst for the colony. In proportion to its population, writes a trade paper, " Grocery," New Zealand sends far the largest amount of goods, and also of foodstuffs, and also takes from us the largest amount of British manufactures.
