The Shipowners' Federation at Antwerp has voted one million francs to resist the dockers' strike. IMPERIAL DEFENCE. London, August 25. Captain Ottley has been appointed secretary to the Committee on Imperial Defence. CRUISERS FOR AUSTRALIA. The cruisers Psyche and Pioneer have been recommiasioned for tho Australian station, and leave Singapore for Australia on Monday. NEW STEAMERS ORDERED. The Peninsular and Oriental Co. has ordered three steamers of the Moldavia class and an express steamer, aggregating 40,000 tons. Tho cost will largely exceed a million. DRIVERS' STRIKE. New York, August 26. Twelve, thousand drivers, employed in the wholesale meat trade of New York, have struck. A SOCIALIST WELCOME. Receive^ August 26, 8.66 a.m. London, August 25. A large crowd of Social Democrats carrying red flags, singing and cheering, welcomed Mr Quelch (who was expelled from the Socialist Conference) at the Holborn viaduct station. TELEGRAPHISTS' STRIKE. New York, August 26. The telegraphists' strike is apparently fizzling otu. BATTLESHIPS FOR 'FRISCO. It was officially announced after the conference between President Roosevelt and the Navy Department, that sixteen battleships would start in December via the Magellan Straits for San Francisco. A flotilla of destroyers will sail at the same time, but will not accompany the fleet.
