BURGLARIES IN WELLINGTON
» MR T. G. MACARTHY'S HOUSE ROBBED. The dwelling of Mr T. G. Macarthy, in Bouloott-street, Wellington, was the scene of a daring theft between the hours of 11 o'clock on Saturday night and 2.50 o'clock on Sunday morning. There appears to have been several men concerned in the matter, and there are indications that it was premeditated and successfully carried out by experienced hands. The valuables stolen included two gold watches, and £10 in money. Entrance to the house was made through an open window in the uppo<: storey. In order to reach this the thieves secured a ladder from an outhouse in the yard of Mr Macarthy's premises. A young lady staying at the house heard footsteps about 2 o'clock, but thinking that Mr Macarthy was moving about took no notice. Later she heard voices, and eventually heard .the kitchen door slam. This convinced her that something was wrong and she immediately called Mr Macarthy. A subsequent examination of the premises snowed that the drawers in different parts of the house bad been pulled out but nothing was missing from them. The thieves had apparently been after the keys of a sale which was in the passage of the house. They found them in Mr Macarthy's trousers pocket in his bedroom, and abstracted the plunder from the safe.* The police were at once informed of the case, and Sergeant Lyon lost no time in enquiring into the matter which is now in the bands of the de- ' ttctives.
