'PER PRESS ASSOCIATION." AUCKLAND METHODIST MISSION. Auckland, July 19. The Auckland Methodist Mission has decided to build a new mission hail <rf wood in East street, to accoc modate from nine hundred to one thousand persons, with a small hall behind the platform to accommodate upwards of two hundred persons. The cost is estimated at nearly £4000. AUCKLAND AND ELECTRICITY. No less than 89 applications were received by the City Council for the position of*electrical engineer for the city under the electric light and piwer scheme. The Streets Committee was instructed to go through the applications and reduce them to six. IMMIGRANTS BY THE IONIC. A number of immigrants who came to the colony by the lonic arrived at Onehunga by the Takapuna this morning. Some of the new arrivals were met by friends and relatives who had evidently arrived some time near last Christmas, and conversation between them, while waiting for a conveyance to Auckland, was most amusing. AN EXTRADITED BANKRUPT. A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of Robert Gibb, late hotelkeeper at Neayesville ; was held to-day. The Official Assignee stated that the liabilities according to the bankrupt's statements included unsecured creditors £376 10s, and secured creditors £750. A balance of £75 found in the bankrupt's possession when extradited brought the total assets to £227 18s, showing a normal shortage of £76. Gibb stated that when he went orifinally into the Neavesville Hotel c had 3s 3d of his own, but before negotiating for the hotel he had between £&) to £40. Asked if he had any offer ho make, the debtor said he had no chance of doing anything behind four walls. AUCKLAND TRAM TROUBLE. A telegram to the Public Works Department questions the City Council's right to allow an increased number of passengers beyond that which the cars were originally licensed to carry. NEWS FROM THE ISLANDS. Advice received by the steamer Atua from the Islands, is to the effect that the local three-masted schooner Ysabel (Captain W. Ross) encountered the cyclone which caused the s.s. Navua to return to port, and sustained damage more or less serious. The Ysabel left Auckland on June 22, and when about six days out encountered terrific weather. The sails were clewed, and it was soon apparent that the* little vessel was at the capricious mercy of the storm, which lasted for several days. The Ysabel was hove to, and, to increase the buoyancy of the vessel Captain Ross had the whole of the deck cargo, consisting of about 5000 feet of sawn timber jettisoned. Huge seas broke all round, and a considerable quantity of water found its way on deck, where everything moreable was pocked up and carried overboard, while the bulwarks suffered considerably, some ten feet being torn away. After the storm subsided, the Ysabel was put on her course, and reached Nukualofa on July 6. The Ysabel was still at Nukualofa when the Atua called on 13th inst. OBITUARY. Invercargill, July 19. Captain James Gardner died today, aged 71. The deceased was well-known as the' former owner of the Birchwood Estate, the finest homestead in Southland. He played a large part in introducing sport in the district, and for many years' ran his own pack of hounds. He was also the founder of the well-known Birchwood flock of Romney sheep. FATAL SCOW ACCIDENT. Auckland, July 20 The scow Flora sank off Deyonport, in Auckland Harbor, early this morn ing. It is believed three of her crew are drowned.
