DEATH OF MR WEARNE.
— — «. „ . Mr Jaketh Eddy W«anie, a wellknown mine manager in New Zealand, died at the residence of Mr H. F. Logan, Brougham-street, Wellington, about 10.30 o'clock on Tuesday morning from hydrochloric acid ; oisoning. Deceased was a married man with a wife and family, and lived at Co-lombo-street, Newtown. According to information supplied to the Lamb-ton-quay Police Station about four o'clock yesterday afternoon, Mr Wearne went to the house of Mr Logan x>n Monday morning to assist in examining some mineral specimens. He retired, it was presumed, for dinner, but returned about a minute later; and said— "l have done it." Dr. Elliott was called in and he found that deceased had taken hydrochloric acid which was used in the work he and Mr Logan had been engaged at. was done for him but without sucoess. Mr Wearne had had experience in mining both in Australia and New Zealand— more particularly in New Zealand. For a great many years he was on the West Coast. He managed several mines at Reefton (where one of his sons is now in charge of a mine) and afterwards took oharge of the antimony works at isindeavour Inlet, remaining there until work ceased. From the South he went to the northern gokutelds, and took charge of one of the mines in the Waihi district. Subsequently he retired from active life. Mr Wearne was a man of abstemious habits, and was widely respect-od.-Poet.
