BLACK-PREMYSLAV CONCERT — »— TO-NIGHT. A tribute to the growth of the musical taste in Australasia is the fact that the very best artists in the world now visit the colonies. At the concert to be given this evening music lovers will have the pleasure of hearing two men admittedly in the very front rank, supported by t*»yo talon ted artists of exceptional merit. Mr Black is not only the possessor of a splendid voice, bnt in the matter of interpreting vocal music ho has no superiors. His contributions to the programme will be, "Vittoria Vittoria," 'Two Grenadiers," "Had a Hoi*M*," "0 Ruddier than the Cherry," "Kirkconuell Lea," and "Gia La Luna." "Better than Kubelik," say the critics, and indeed it is hard to imagine anything finer than the concord of sweet melody Leopold Premyslav obtains from his famour Quarnerius. His numbers will bo — "Concerto, D Major," Allegro Maestoso (Paganini), "Romance. G Major" (Beethoven); "Hungarian Dance VII" (Brahms); "Perpetuum Mobile" (Ries); "Sextette" (Lucia di Lammermoor, Donizetti); "Airs Russes" (Wieniawski). Miss Buckman renders two items, "Elizabeth's Prayer," from Tannhauser, and a new song by Batten, "April Morn'," anf l Miss Beatty also plays two solos—Chopin's Scherzo in C Sharp and two bracketed numbers, "Melodic" (Padrewski), and "Witches Dance" (Macdowell). With such a programme the holding capacity of the house should be severely taxed. The following letter from the wellknown musical critic and proprietor of the Triad, appeared in the Dunedin Star : — Sir, — There was a numerous audience at the first concert given by the above artists in Dunedin, but from my place of vantage in the front row of the dress circle I failed to see any of our embyro vocalists and fiddlers. That this is clue to insincerity or lack of enthusiasm is unthinkable and unsupposable ; the alternative is that our young artists do not understand what they are missing. Let me tell them that MiAndrew Black is the greatest living English baritone, and that to hoar liim is worth guineas a lesson to those who would like to sing. The natural quality of his voice is simply delightful; his breath control, his enunciation, and production are practically perfect, and his versatility is amazing. Similarly, to sit at the feet of Premyslav and learn of him is a blessing that is within reach of our violinists about once in 10 years. Carlyle has well said "I don't wonder at what, they miss." lam convinced that it is only necessary for our amateurs and music lovers generally to know these things, and the Princess Theatre will be all too small to hold them on Saturday night. — I am, etc., C.
