A special meeting of the Federal Cabinet considered the cable of Mr Deakin regarding mail matters. Sir John Forrest gave no information beyond stating that the Government was now in a position to negotiate finally for the extension of the Vancouver service. After Bauer was murdered, Cutler, a jeweller in Little Collins street, informed the police that a man called at his shop and inquired Bauer's address a few days ago. The description corresponded with that of a well known Victorian criminal. Suspicion points to a fugitive who has gone to Sydney. This idea fits in with a story thai a man was seen to leave the building in a violent hurry a few minutes after 5 o'clock. He hailed a cab, telling the driver to drive fast to Spencer street, as the Sydney express left at 5.5 p.m. NARROW ESCAPE. Melbourne,. June 11. ' The barque Eagle Crag, on her voyage from Liverpool, narrowly escaped destruction by fire, caused by a lamp upsetting on the sail locker on April 13th. The fire spread with alarming rapidity. Holes were cut on the deck and water poured in, which finally ' extinguished the flames. INCOME TAX. Adelaide, June 11. The case against the A.M.P. Society, which made no Income tax return in 1902, on the ground that the law exempted Mutual Life Assurance Companies, was argued before thd jSupreme Court. The Court found the society had in South Australia an income of £28,562, which was taxable.
