[rU FMM ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, June 10. During th© season which closed with the Winter Meeting on Saturday, the AR.C. put through the totahsator the sum of £216,283, an increase of £17,419 on the previous season. The committee of the Auckland Flaxmillers Association passed resolutions strongly . urging the Government to appoint a Chief Fibre Expert, at a salary not less than £400 a year, and recommending Mr Johnston, grader at Auckland, for the position; also recommending the Government to nndertake the grad--IDg ' Cambridge, Monday. A four year old son of Mr Geo. Price, a Karapiro settler, was burned to death by his clothes catching fire while the parents were absent milking. Hokitika, June 8. During the last four days the AsMBsment Court has been engaged reviewing the Government valuations of the country of Westland. A feature of the proceedings was the fact that in one riding ,the County Council entered 235 objections, on the ground that the valuation was too low. Except in two instances, the objections were successful, and the total valuation of the riding in question was increased by £27,500. The settlers showed a good deal of opposition, and attended in force. The proceedings excited a large amount of local interest. Mr Good, the inspecting valuer, was present, and fought to sustain the local valuer's estimate in opposition to the effort of the local body to have the values raised. The Council engaged outside and local experts to support its case. Napier, June 8. ffl'Lachlan has challenged Day to run at Napier, within twenty days, for side wagers of £50, and a purse of £75, over distances of 100, 130, and 200 yards. . The Wharf Labourers' Union has resolved to support Mr Slater's nomination as workers' representative on the Arbitration Court. There are twenty-four cases set down for hearing at the sittings of the Arbitration Court in Napier. Auckland, June 10. Forgery is treated in this colony in very much too free and easy a manner, said Justice Denniston in the Supreme Court, in sentencing Walter Scott to twelve months' imprisonment for forging a oheqne at Hawera. The Judge reminded the prisoner that not long ago the offence was a hanging matter. Gisborne, June 10. The Abbotsford residence of Mr David White, of Tiniroto, was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. Nothing was saved. Pahiatua, June 10. A man named John Beaufort, a surveyor, was found by two men at the foot of a staircase about ten o'clock o nSaturday night. He evidently had fallen down stairs. He was conveyed to the Hospital, and a doctor was summoned, but the man died at eight on Sunday morning. The deceased leaves three grown-up sons here, a wife and two children being in America, and a daughter in Australia. An inquest is being held. There was a slight shock of earthquake felt here at 2.15 p.m. yesterday. • Eketahuna, June 10. A serious buggy accident occurred at Tiraumea yesterday, as Mrs Collins Holmes, Miss Gilbert, the Rev. Mr McLean and a servant were returning home from the Waterfalls. Th< horses bolted and commenced kicking, the road being rough, and the occupants were precipitated from the vehicle. Mrs Holmes was picked up unconscious, but after artificial respiration she came round. The driver, Harutn. vas also rendered unconscious and still remains so un der medical attendance. The other ompants were more or less shaken sod braised.
