FEILDING DEBATING SOCIETY.
The first debate of the i-'eilding Literary and Debating Society was held in the Council Chambers last night. Rev. A. S. limes Jones was appointed to the chair, in the absence of the President and V ice-President. The subject, "That the women cf New Zealand be eligible to becomo members of Parliament,," was debated. The affirmative was taken by Mr J. 8. Tingey. in a well thought out address, ana the Rev. W. F. Stent replied in a telling speech. The affirmative was supported by Messrs Hopkins, Leniham, and Fitzpatrick, aud the negative by Messrs Watson, West, and the Rev. Innes- Jones. Those present were very evenly divided on the matter, and when it was put to the vote, the negatives won on the casting vote of the Chairman. There wore several ladies present. For the meeting next Tusday night, contributions to the manuscript journal, original and otherwise, will be received and discussed. At a meeting of the Committee, it was decided to fix the subscription at 2s 6d.
