WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.

• [PBB PBBBB ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, May 22. THE ACTING - PREMIER. Though Mr Hall-Jones, the ActingPremier, is making good progress towards recovery, it is generally understood that his illness is of such a nature that it may necessitate his retirement from the Ministry. Ever since Mr Seddon's death, Mr HallJones has had a great deal .of arduous work to perform, and the load he has had to carry was sufficient to severely tax the capabilities of a man with a much stronger constitution. His loss to the Ministerial Party, should he retire into private life, will bo very greatly felt, and his place will be exceedingly difficult to fill. A MISTAKE. It is thought here that a mistake has been made in cabling the name of the newly-appointed member of the New Zealand Defence Council, and that the new appointee must be Major Anson ,who served in the last Boer war and wears the Queen's medal with four clasps and the King's medal with two clasps. PELORUS JACK. Captain Post, of the Tutanekai. has secured a remarkable photograph of Pelorus Jack. He photographed the fish as it took a leap in the air. One of the eyes, the mouth, and the fins are clearly shown on the photographic plate, which has been purchased by the Tourist Department for £10.
