Britain's attitude on the question of Preference at the Imperial Conference, has induced the Democrats in Massachussetts to make reciprocity with Canada the chief plank in their platform for the next campaign for the State Governorship. THE WOOLWICH EMPLOYEES. London, May 20. King Edward's reply to the petition, as sent through Mr Gladstone, was read at a mass meeting of Wdolwich Aresnal employees. The reply ! expressed grief at the distress arising out of the unemployment and confidence that no man would be discharged whose labor can be profitably utilised in the public service, and everything would be done to mitigate the unavoidable hardships referred to in the petition to Mr Haldane„ with an expression of personal wishes to that effect. The reply was received with cheers but Mr Haldane's name with groans. The meeting resolved in favor of summoning Parliament with a view i to stopping discharges. j THE STRIKE ON THE RAND. Pretoria. May 20. Twenty mine owners, having refused to submit the trouble to arbitra--1 tion, the delegates representing twenty-seven producing mines on the Rand, resolved that all skilled employees in producing mines owned by the companies and syndicates affiliated to the Chamber of Mines cease work, the last shift to be worked tomorrow. The resolution exempts the J. B. Robinson group of mines. London, May 20. The Daily Chronicle's Johannesburg correspondent says the outlook is grave, owing to the Chinese who may try to break out.
