FOXTON SUB-UNION.

(Our Own Correspondent.) SANDON (14) v. RONGOTEA (3). Sandon played their first match in the Cup fixtures against Rongotea on the lattor's ground last Saturday afternoon. The ground was fairly dry, although well besprinkled with patches of cow manure, which the boys had to flounder in. At 3.30 Sandon kicked off, with Rongotea playing two men short. For the first half-hour, it looked as if Rongotea were going to hold their own, but not being m as good form as Sandon, their wind gave out, and just before half time T. Richardson scored a try for Sandon. After the spell Rongotea were as fit as ever again, and they were then playing with a full team. They managed to keep the visitors hard pressed for a quarter of an hour, when F. Withers broke away and scored a try for them, making the score 3 points each. This try seemed to be Rongotea's final effort, for the team seemed to lag through the rest of the game, with Sandon fighting near their goal line, when A. Lobb scored the second try for Sandon. H. Thompson was next to score, and Richardson kicked a good goal, -making the score — Sandon 11, Rongotea 3. Just before time was up, Thompson again got over the line, which ended the game with Sandon 14, Rongotea 3. The Rongotea team are lacking in combination and lasting propensities, but I am convinced they would be a formidable force to meet after they had a bit more practice. The Sandon team were not playing up to their ! usual standard, the bulk of the work being practically left to a few. A. George filled his position as full-back in grand style. I noticed, but for him, a try for Rongotea would have been inevitable. Drey and McNae did good work as the wing forwards, and T. Richardson, on the left wing, is showing up well this year; also Thompson, who is one of the most solid workers in the team.
