The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following . cable from the High Commissioner, London, dated May 18th:— The mut- [ ton market is quiet, and there is a . poor local demand, except for prime light weights, of which a great scarcity exists. Canterbury mutton 4d, North Island at 3|d. There is a • large supply of ewes on the market, averaging 2|d. River Plate mutton is in large supply, and is being strongly pushed for sale. The average price of this mutton is 3|d. There is a good demand for all lamb, with more enquiry for forward delivery. Canterbury brands are s£d, other sjd. Stocks of New Zealand beef on hand are light ,and the market firm. Present quotations 3|d and 3Jd for hind and forequarters, respectively. The butter market is steady for fine quality, but lifeless for ordinary classes. Siberian supplies are increasing, and are quoted at 98s. The average price for choioe New Zealand butter is 995, and Danish lOsd. . The cheese market is firm, and there is a good demand for IJew Zealand cheese at 66s for white, and 64s for coloured. A small shipment of Canadian cheese has been delayed on account of the strike. The hemp market is quiet, with only small business doing. Good, fair grade, on spot, is quoted at £35. MayJuly shipments £34, fair grade, on spot £30 10s. The cocksfoot seed market is quiet, but firm, and there is no pressure to sell. 171 b bright dressed seed is quoted at 545. The wheat market is very much stronger. Oats are firm, with a hardening tendency, and peas are firm, but the demand in only moderate. The kauri giim market is rather quiet, owing to th epoor demand. Following are the current quotations : —Ordinary to fair threeqnarter-scraped 1465, fair half-scraped 85s, brown, fair half to threequarter-scraped 81s. pickings, common to good 465, bush, fair to good pale and amber scraped 150s per owt. The stock on bind is 1091.
