UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCES FOR THE GOVERNOR.
Gisborne, May 20. Lord Plunket is having a very rough journey from Napier. He reached Wairoa on Saturday afternoon and left again yesterday via Tiniroto, the Morere road being blocked seven miles from Tiniroto. A serious washout was met by the coach, which had to be abandoned, and a settler's buggy obtained; but another washout a mile or two further on compelled them to leave this behind, and tramp several miles in the pouring rain to Tiniroto, which they reached at 7 o'clock last evening. There are slips on the road, which are now being cleared, and the Governor, in a borrowed buggy, hopes to make a fresh start before noon, reaching Gisborne to-night. Though the storm has ceased, the weather is still cold and cheerless. Wairoa, May 20. The Governor arrived on Saturday, and left for Gisborne yesterday. He intends to visit Lake Waikaremoana on another occasion. A southerly gale has been raging for six days, and it is still raining. The rivers are very high, but no damage is reported. Captain Edwin telegraphed at 1.2 p.m. to-day: — Moderate to strong southerly winds. Glass rise slowly. Probably frost to-night.
