An organised public search for th< missing man William Preston, whe left his home in Blenheim alone with a bicycle and gun to go into Riverlands duck shooting, resulted yesterday in the discovery of a bicycle, which has since been identified as Preston's, near the Opawa River, some distance above the Lagoons. Dragging operations are taking place to-day in the adjacent creeks and holes. Sheepowners of the district have formed a strong committee to demand from the Christchurch Meat Company the right of handling theii own bills of lading in respect of frozen mutton and lamb. A deputation is to wait on the Directors this week, and if the request is declined, it is intended to take other steps. There is great and general dissatisfaction at the price per lb. for freezers as compared with that in Canterbury, while the average weights of lamb in Marlborough last quarter were only one pound per carcase less than North Canterbury, and the price per pound was |d. less. Wellington, May 20. The Wellington branch of the Teachers' Institute has passed a resolution that the present method of appointment and promotion of teachers is eminently unsatisfactory. The Magistrate to-day ordered the extradition of Gustav Hillman, on a charge of forging and uttering a cheque in the name the Hertzberg Coy., Brisbane. v Wellington, May 20. At the Supreme Court to-day the trial was commenced of Claude Paget on a charge of murdering Eleanor Pearl Axup at her home in Abel Smith street on 12th February. Albert Burridge, a boy found guilty of an indecent asault on a girl, was admitted to probation for two years. His Honour said the lad deserved punishment, but he was too old to be sent to the Reformatory, and to send the boy to gaol would destroy his life prospects. In the Divorce Court to-day a decree nisi was granted in the case of Elizabeth Evans v. Ralph John Evans. In the case of Walter Samuel Best v. Helen Best, an order was made fo rrestitution of conjugal rights. Annie Ross was granted a decree nisi against George Ross, and a similar order was made in the case of Catherine Amelia Scotland Smith v. John Scotland Smith. In Herbert Henton v. Jessie Henton an order was made for restitution of conjugal rights. Dunedin, May 20. In the Compensation Court judgment for the claim of Edmond Connors v~. the Dunedin Corporation, Connors claimed £2700 as compensation for loss of land taken in street widening.
