BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Feilding Borough Council was held last night. Present— Mr W. J. B. Trewin (Mayor), and a full Council. CORRESPONDENCE. The following letters were received : — From W. Jones, asking for permission to blast logs in front of his section. — Refused. From Presbyterian Church Committee, Feilding, asking the Council to erect a globe light at the lower corner of Grey anl Aorangi streets, in place of the one now at the other corner. — Referred to Lighting Committee to report on. From Feilding Literary and Debating Society, asking for use of the Council Chamber for meetings on "Tuesday evenings, and asking for statement as to charge.— Granted, subject to payment of rent. From Feilding Chamber of Com nerce, asking Council again to erect a bicycle stand at tho Post Office. From A. Robinson, calling jittention to the fact that a former employee of the Council was in a very poor position, not being able to work owing to having strained his heart while spreading metal for the Council. — Nothing to be dono. From the Colonial Secretary's office, stating that an Order-in-Coun-cil, dated 24th ult., declaring Feilding to be a fire district under " Tho Fire Brigades' Act, 1906," had been published in the Gazette of 25th ult. From same, asking Council to name three gentlemen to sit on the Fire I Board, in accordance with the Act. — The May;»r, Cr. Tolley, and Mr Fred. Piiani appointed. From Public Health Office, Wellington, staing Dr. J. P. Frengley had been appoined District Health Officer for the Wellington Province. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Engineer reported as follows : — Intake. — During the recent heavy floods three sections of the galleries at the intake were washed away, and the course of the river changed, so that the intake chamber is at present in the centre of the river. The intake chant bor will work all right so long as the river stays in its present position, but in the event of its altering its course it will be necessary to put in new galleries to tap the m er. Kerbing and Channelling Contract. — This contract is proceeding satisfactorily, one side of Manchester street being almost completed. Water Supply. — In reply to Mr H. A. Wnnsch's application for an extension of the water main along Montague street, I have to state that at present there is only ono house in thi9 street, and I do not think it would be advisable for the Council to extend the main as requested until there are several houses in this street, but arrangements might be made with Mr Wunsch to run a half-inch connection from Dorby street to his section, a distance of about three chains. There have been 229 sewerage and 335 wat»"fr permits issued to date. Cart Shed.— During the past fortnight I have prepared plans and specifications for the erection of a cart shed at the Borough Abattoirs, also specifications for a maintenance metalling contract exten ling over a period of twelve months. Timber for Bridge. — A consignment of 22 nieces of ironbark timber for re-deckin*_ the Kiwitea Bridge has arrived, but the work cannot be nroceoded with until the remainder of the order, including the stringers, arrives. — Report received. RESOLHTTONS. The following motions were carried : — That Mr Cleary, the present poundkeeper and rangor, be re-appointed to tho position for a further period of twolvp months on same terms as before. That tenders be called for maintenance metal, subject to specifications prer>firod by the Engineer, and approved by the Works Committee. That the Borough Engineer be requested to devise some means to prevent fish obtaining entrance to the water mains That a Special Committee, consisting of Crs. Cobbe, Goodbehere, Bramwell, and Tollev bo set up to report upon the present borough staff, with a view to the reorganisation of the same, and also to report as to providing proper furnishing for the Council Chambers.
