Aitken, pupil teacher, Hunter ville; H. Mead, assistant, UtiKu; A. T. Lynch, assistant, Sandon; 1. Vearoe, assistant, Cheltenham; ix. Cox, sole teacher, Pukekata; A. Jiiver--166, Waitohi ; Miss Hanron, assistant, Ohingaiti. . Appointments.— The following appointments were confirmed: — Aramoho, il. E. Marshall; Tokorangi, Miss A. Lewis; Ohakune, Mr G. ttmall; Matapu, Miss Casey; Pukeokaliu, Miss Bradwell; Wanganui, A. McLaughlin, assistant Queen's Park; Kakaramea, W. A. Curteis. Exhibition Absence.— Letter received from Mr Aitken, headmaster, Wanganui District High School, on behali of himself and others re absence from school in connection with the school excursion to the Exhibition. — The Chairman stated that he had instructed the secretary to reply to the teachers, traversing the position, and pointing out that their action was reprehensible, and that it is imperative that leave should be formally applied for in all cases. Leave of Absence.— Leave of absence was granted to the following : — H. E. Mahoney, Clydesdale; k\ E. S. Rockel, Pohonui, S. Strachan, Halcombe; M. Scott, Terrace End; L. J. McDonnell, South Makirikiri; A. C. Coll, Ruakura; M. Bailey, Ohakea ; Miss Cheyne. Whenuakura. The art master at the Wanganui Technical School (Mr D. E. Hutton) wrote applying for a year's leave, to enable him to visit England and the principal Continental systems, with a view to studying the latest methods employed in those countries. It wa% decided to offer Mr Hutton three months' pay, he to resign and to have the option of applying for reappointment on his return, Mr Hutton to be informed that these were the conditions which were imposed in the case of Mr L. J. Watkin. Terrace End.— Mr Bennett reported re fence, and on his recommendation the tender of Mr Robbie (£lO 3s) was accepted for the work. Raurimu and Makatote Schools. — Mr Purnell reported on the conditions obtaining at these schools, and expressing the opinion that it would be unwise for the Board to make any permanent arrangements until the settlement of the districts is assured, for the reason that at present the population is almost wholly dependent on the works connected with the Main Trunk Railway. He recommended that a special grant of £1 for £1 up to £12 be made, in addition to house allowance, to augment the salary of the teacher at Makatote.— Report adopted. Education Reserve.— Mr Bennett reported re encroachment of Maijawatu river on school reserve, and recommended that some consideration should be made to settlers in consideration of protective works done by them.— Copy of report to be forwarded to Department. Departmental communications. — 'Letter re Empire Day; received. Letter declining to make grant for school at Raumai ; received. Letter stating unable to make grant for enlargement of Lytton street school ; received. Letters notifying grant of £400 for Infant school at Terrace End, £130 for additions to Kaponga, £350 for Taihape, .—j for Sedgebrook, and increase of grant for Ararata residence from £176 to £138; received. Letter declining to grant for Riverton: received, Letter re teachers travelling to Palmerston instead of Marton, and asking if the Board can give reason why teachers should not be asked to refund excess fares. — Resolved, that explanation be sent. Letters intimating postponement of consideration of applications for grants for Utiku. Tokorangi, and for enlargement of residences; the Chairman stated that he had replied to the communication re Tokorangi, and a further communication had been received stating that the application for grant would be favourably considered when site had been secured ; resolved to instruct Board's solicitors to take necessary steps to secure site. Letter notifying approval of diversion of part of grant made for residence at TirirauSawa for residence at Owhakura ; received, Fit»herbert East. — Application to be made to Department for a grant for enlargement. Carnarvon. — Mr Purnell authorised to arrange for lining of building at Makownai, and also for supply of a heating stove. Kairanga. — Mr Bennett reported that enlargement was unnecessary. He j^commended grant of £1 for £1 up to^4 for drainage; report adopted. Tirftqa. — Applications to be made to Department for grant for residence. Apiti.-vf .estimate of cost satisfactory, shelt^ shed to be^erected. Winter Etolidays.*r-ft was resolved that the da(ML~4>f the winter holidays be altered to coincide with the winter show of the Jbifanawatu A. and P. Association. >■" Bee Culture.— Mr Smith produced a sampm of honey from Taihape, and after spjbaking of the advisability of fostering the industry thereby represented* moved "That the Board make Application to the Agricultural Dejwk^jfeent to allow Mr Hopkins, the jPWvernment Bee Expert, to attend Saturday classes to instruct teachers in bee keeping." The motion was seconded by Mr Spurdle, and carried.
