The man Smithers, who, on Friday night, attempted the murder of Nellie Jackson, and his victim are still in the hospital making good progress towards recovery. Smithers is in custody. Auckland; April 10. In the Arbitration Court the claim of Louisa Williams against the Northern Steamship Coy., for compensation for the death of her husband, was settled by the payment of £100 and costs to the widow for the benefit of herself and five children. Pahiatua, April 10. At a large and representative gathering of settlers last night the Hon. W. W. McCardle was presented with an address, testifying to the esteem in which he is held by settlers, and particularly to the good work he had done its a member of local bodies and as a member of the Land Board, having done much to promote the settlement of the district. Mrs McCardle was also the recipient of a silver tea service from the ladies of the district. The Mayor presided, and apologies were read from Hon. Dr. Fmdlay, Attorney-General, and members of the Lower House for nonattendance. Mr Ross, member for the district, the Mayor and other speakers delivered eulogistic addresses. Dunedin, April 10. At the invitation of the Southland Farmers' Union, Mr Tom McKenzie, M.H.R., speaks on the Land Bill at Wyndham on the 23rd ,and at Otautau and Invercargill on the two following nights.
