[per press association.] Auckland, February 21. At the camp of the No. 8 Garrison Artillery Volunteers at Fort Cautloy, Takapuna, this afternoon, John Bergin, a member of the corps, shot limself accidentally. At four o'clock Bergin went into his tent, evidently vith the object of cleaning his rifle, and ten minutes later a shot was heard, and on a sergeant-major entering he found the man lying dead. The bullet entered the stomach, and, traversing upwards, emerged through the back of the neck. Evidently Bergin had overlooked the fact that the weapon was loaded. There is no suggestion of suicide. Deceased was twenty-five years of age, single, and a resident of Ai chill, Auckland. The Hazel Craig, the first of the three barques of the Craig line, which began a race from Newcastle to Auckland eight days ago, arrived this morning. Neither the James Craig nor the Lizzie Craig are yet signalled. Wellington, February 22. A civil engin-aer, named E. Buzonac, shot himself with a revolver at hs lodgings this morning. Death was instantaneous. The deceased, who was about fifty, complained at the breakfast table that his fellow lodgers made fun of him, and went to his room and shot himself. Hastings, February 22. "The Duke's Own" Maori contnigent of 110, left this morning for the Exhibition. Dunedin, February 22. The Minister of Marine leaves for lnvercargill on Monday to confer with the members of tho Bluff Harbour Board on matters of importance affecting »he Bluff harbour. Wellington, February 22. The body of a man, name unknown, was found in the harbour to-day. H had evidently been in the water some time. Pahiatua, February 22. Martin Madigan, of Ormondville, was thrown out of his trap while returning from the Woodville races. His neck was dislocated, death ensuing about ten hours later. Timaru, February 22. Another strike has occurred at the Pareroa Freezing Works this morning, the 15 butchers there employed declining to start killing unless promised payment at the rate of 25s per 100. Some of the slaughtermen, when interviewed, said that butchers at all freezing works in Canterbury were in sympathy with them in their demand for this increase of 5s per 100. Borthwick and Sons, who put large numbers of sheep through the Pareroa works, to-day offered to pay slaughtermen at the rate they now demand to kill about 2000 sheep for them to-morrow. The offer will probably be accepted. . I understand that the conference between representatives of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Co. and tho slaughtermen is being held in Christchurch to-day, and tho men on the strike here are awaiting the result. Wellington, February 22. The statement made in a telegram from Wairoa that the native minister, in the course of a speech in that town, indicated the probability that the Land Bill would be dropped, was brought under the notice of the Acting-Premier by a Post reporter this morning. The Hon. W. HallJones informe dthe interviewer that Government had no intention to drop the Bill, which he considered was in accordance with the wishes of a great majority of the people, and of the members of the House. He could not credit that the Native Minister had made the statement attributed to him, and he felt that his colleague had been misreported.
