HOUSING THE WORKERS.
[FIB PUBS ASaOCUIION.j Auckland, Ferbuary 15. At the City Council meeting last night, the Mayor submitted a lengthy report on a scheme for tho housing or workers in proximity to the city. He favoured the scheme involving wholly municipal capital expenditure, and the estimate cost of £480 for 5 roomed cottages inclusive of cost of land ; to be rented, the former at 9s to 10s, and the latter at 10s to 11s. He recommended that, in the first instance, £20,000 should be borrowed, which would enable at least forty houses to be .erected. The Council resolved that, with a view to preventing the danger ■of the growth of slums in Auckland, aud providing suitable dwellings for a section of the community whose -wants are not supplied in any other -way, the scheme brought forward by the Mayor should be referred toy the Finance Committee for their consideration and report.
