THE SLAUGHTERMEN'S STRIKE.
», < [By Telegraph.] (Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Febraaiy 14. The slaughtermen's strike has continued to-day, and owing; to the large number of sheep mi the works and on the road the position is' rather a serious one. The Bheep at the works must deteriorate both in weight and yalue. At one of the works twelre thousand sheep are being fed on hay and watered from an artesian supply. To-day froaen meat was used in connection with the city supply. This afternoon the employers "sprang" another sixpence, and offered the men 32s 6d a hundred. The latter had previously signified their willingness to accept 235. At the Wellington Meat fix- - port , Co.'s works this morning . a number of sheep were killed for local consumption by one of the company's buyers and three or four other hands. The Union end a number of the men are likely to be cited before the Arbitration Court next week. . The lat^ est news is that the men will not ao» cept the employeis' terms, but in* ttnd to fight it cut. The secretaiy of the union, who has been verking haid to bring about a settlement, will take no further part in. the dispute. [PBR PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, February 15. -**. At a meeting last night, the men decided that, as the companies had refused to increase their offer from 33s 6d to SSs, they (the men) would revert to their old demand and refuse work under 255. It now transpires that the companies were prepared to pay 29b for Freezers, and a slightly lower rate for .^ others, but this offer does not "appear bo hare reached the men until too late last night. Hopes of a settlement are entertained.
