EMBEZZLEMENT OF FRIENDLY SOCIETY MONEY

[Peb Press Association.] Wellington, November 30. In sentencing Robertson, for embezzlement of Friendly Society money, Sir Robert Stout said he always endeavoured to give effect to the recommendation of the jury, who apparently, in this case, were actuated by the fact that the auditors had uot done, their duty properly, but on the other hand had performed it very perfunctorily Such an offence, however, could not be passed over lightly. There might have been' seme muddle ,but as there had been a system of peculation extending over a long number of years, the case was a serious one, seeing that a lodge, which was carried on by people who are not high up in life lor their own benefit, and that they had lost some, two thousand pounds during the prisoner's period of management. He was very sorry for the I-iisoner's family, of which anyone could be proud, but he had to pass a sentence of three and a half years' imprisonment.
