A Word for the Advocate.
The editor-proprietor of the Rangitikei Advocate has delved , into his memory for reminiscenses of journalism in Palmerston North, and from that unreliable source he has evolved the statement that there was trouble in the big town between a reporter (not connected with his paper) and a local body —we were nearly saying the auctioneers. Well, whatever the trouble was and whoever the reporter is, does not concern us, for he is not on the staff of the Star either ; but we also remember some incidents of Palmerston journalism. Here is one, and as we call a spade a spade, and not an agricultural implement, we do not merely hint at the individuals. Atone time the editor-proprietor of the Advocate was a strong socialist, and advocated — under the rose— land nationalisation. He published a series of articles Bigned " K. of L." in his journal, aud when taxed with the authorship by some of his friends, who were on the other side of the fence, he ascribed the source to the present editor of the Star. This was accepted by his informants in all good faith, till 0110 day an article appeared signed " K. of L.", replying to a letter published the previous day. As the supposed author was in the back blocks, beyond reach of the paper, the duplicity of our Marton friend was discovered, and there were strained relations — but not between a local body and a reporter. We have a few just as interesting little yarns, but space is too valuable just now.
