FOUR MEN DROWNED.

• • • Per Press Association. W T estport, Thursday. Four men were drowned on Karamea Bar yesterday. They were employed for the time being under the Public Works Department Mr Thompson, surveyor, had been engaged some time surveying in pursuance of a scheme of harbour improvements and had practically finished his work. He returned to Westport on Tuesday. A telegram arrived from Wellington requiring bar soundings, and Mr Thompson was advised here to obtain a ship's boat and sailors for the job. He went back to Karamea yesterday morning and employed the scow Range's men and Hunter, who had previously worked for bim. The boat was swamped on the bar and the four men were drowned.
