The local men pressed from the start, and Cann scored a try which was not converted. The ball went out close to the Auckland line, and McCabe came through the scrum, got the ball as it returned from one of the backs, and, racing in, passed to Burleigh, who scored. Hawthorne missed the goal. One of the local , men was penalised for an illegal tackle, and Magee kicked a goal. Half time came with Sydney 6, Auckland 3. In the second half, Smith, from, half-way, dropped for a "goal, but the ball fell a few yards short. Time was drawing near when the Aucklanders . opened tiie game up, and the best ' play of the match was witnessed. Young sent Uie ball out to Smith, who ; streaked straight as a dart from halfway for the local lime, but was collared at the twenty-five. He passed to Gladding, who ran round in a second behind the posts. Magee added the extra points. The home team made desperate ' efforts, but unavailingly, to retrieve the position, and time iyas called with Auckland 8 South Sydney ... 6 1 The team left, for Auckland at 6.30 p.m. ' Queensland beat the Metropolis ' team by 3to nil. At a meeting of the Marlborough Union, Casey, captain of the Awatere team, was suspended for the season, [ and an apology was demanded from the team for leaving the field on Sat- ' urday. A spectator named Keegan was warned off the Union's grounds for life. A resolution was passed strongly condemning the betting elem ent. The Cheltenham Association Foot- \ ball Club sent a team to Palmerston , yesterday to try conclusions with the Palmerston Club. A well-contested game resulted in a draw, both teams [ scoring two goals, Cheltenham scoring their last goal just before the whistle blew for time. The referee gave general satisfaction. The Cheltenham team were unfortunately three men ! short, but the looal Club very kindly ' supplied three substitutes.
