HOME POLITICS.

Telegraph Press Association Copyright London, Feb 23. In the House of Commons, Sir Henry Campbell Bannerman, replying to Earl Peroy, said ; " I only stated the Chinese labor was tainted with slavery; that it has many of the characteristics of slavery, and that repeat." Daring the debate on Mr Forater s amendment Mr Asquith said the Government intended to terminate the system. It was unable forthwith to sponge out everything. He had never said that the Chinese mast be deported wholesale, bat only intended to warn the Transvaal that any legislation corresponding to the existing ordinance and inconsistent with the best British traditions, would be vetoed. Mr Chamberlain declared the Government would allow the alleged slavery to peter out, giving freedom by the instalment system. He said he had been informed that the Government had consulted the mining magnates in regard to their plans before they were submitted to Parliament. Sir H.Campbell-Bannerman denied this, but Mr Chamberlain reiterated his statement, adding that the mag* nates were contented that the charges would be concluded by demanding a judicial enquiry into the system. The Daily Mail states the Laborifces have refused to vote for the Government until they are promised that there shall be no reindentures of Chinese labor. The Laborites declare that thousands of British workmen are available as miners for the Band at a pound a day. The Government is at variance with the Laborites over a most vital point in the Trades Disputes Bill, namely, Trades Summons responsibility. Mr Keir Hardie, Labor Leader, declares he will not accept any compromise.
