So crowded were the transports that one third of the men died before reaching Suez Canal from wounds, dysentery, inadequate attention and insufficient food. Clyde Ship Building Yards London, Nov 14. The output of the Clyde shipbuilding yards this year establishes a record. Kauri Timber Sydney, This Day. At the Kauri Timber Company's meeting the Chairman stated the abnormal season in New Zealand had interfered with operations and caused a diminution of profits, otherwise the sales were practically the same. The quantity was only five per cent less in value as that of last year's business. The timber trade throughout Australia had been very depressed, but since the Company's year closed a decided improvement had occurred. The improved outlook, coupled with the fact that they still had £15,000 undivided profits left, warranted the recommendation of the payment of the same dividend as last year. Federal Capital Site. Melbourne, This Day. The Federal Capital Site Bill was introduced and read a first time. The intention is to determine on a site in the neighborhood of Dalgety and provide for the acquisition of 900 square miles, with means of access from the sea. The amount of compensation to be paid for the land is not to exceed its value on January Ist of last year. The House then adjourned. Sydney, This Day. Mr Carruthers states that he has not yet begun the fight for the Federal Capital Site. He is waiting the result of his protest, and hopes the Federal Parliament and the Government will deoide that the undoubted rights of New South Wales will be fairly and fully re cognised.
