The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, dated London, 9th inst : — The mutton market is firm and there is more demand. The average price to day for Canterbury mutton is B|d per lb, for other and North Island mutton 3|d per lb, for river mutton 3£d per lb. The lamb market is depressed. There is a limited demand fot better grades and no change in prices. The beef market is firm and there is a good demand for all descriptions. The average price to-day for hind* quarters of New Zealand beef is 3|d per lb, and for fores 3d. The butter market is very firm and New Zealand stock is small. Prices of Servian and Australian are 112s Argentine 118s, Danish 119s. The cheese market it firm and the demand on the spot is good. Canadian sells at 60s. The hemp market is steady and the stock totals 1416 tons a3 against 1338 tons last year. The price of New Zealand hemp " good fair Wellington " grade, on the spot to-day per ton is L3l, and the prospects are favorable. January to March shipments are quoted at L3l. Manilla hemp " fair current " grade on spot to day per ton is L4l ; January to March shipments L4l. The wool market remains firm and there is a good demand for all descriptions at last quotations.
