THE CYCLE TRADE

Mr J. B. Clarkson the well-known cyole importer, has merged his business into a private Limited Liability Company, with a capital of £20,000. This step has been taken to enable the sphere of operations to be extended and also from a management point of view. The announcement was made at a dinner held in Palmerston last evening to celebrate the event. Mr Clarkson in giving the history of the business, stated that he opened business in 1897. Business began to prosper and he removed to the present shop in 1899, when he took up selling machines of his own importation. In those days the shop was too large and a portion was let ; now continued enlargements were being made until the floor space was 5,000 feet. Recently he visited the Old Country and America in, order to find out the most suitable machines for the colony, and in making his selection hit upon the Centuar, Premier and Tribune cycles. He also went thoroughly into the motor trade, but decided that the time was not ripe for this branch of business to be conducted at a profit in the colony ; but the time was nQt fax distant when the $rm. would probably add that branoh to the business. Last year they- put out 1200 new machines and the turnover was £26,000. A week ago 60 machines were unloaded at their workshop door, now they had three left Under the new regime the, business will be conducted as before without any alteration in the management.
