Kiwitea Hack Racing Club.

i First Annual Meeting. The inaugural meeting of the t above Club was destined to be oar r ried out under many favours. The i most important being ideal weather, r induced a large number of local and i outside visitors to attend. About an . hour previous to the first race strings i of vehicles from all directions ) poured into Cheltenham. Shortly i after the scratchings for the first race were announced the familar harangue s of the " two to one bar one " fraternity—eight in all, with an equal [ number of assistants —commenced to i exercise their " leather " lungs. Needless to state, the cash was > plentiful and speculation brisk A ) few of the sly fraternity who attempted to do business on the quiet i were quickly ear marked by the ) police and detectives. Side shows : were there in abundance, and one - particular one our reporter noticed ; was a great source of attraction for i the ladies during the intervals bei tween the races. The turf was in i first-class order, and this course with a few improvements, will make an ideal spot for racing. Of course the public did not expect to be furnished I ' with a stand at the first meeting, but at the sam 6 time the Club deserve oredit for their excellent arrangements. The secretary Mr Boss, and his assistants had a busy time but carried out their duties m a competent manner.
