Feilding Jockey Club's Spring Meeting.

Seoond Day. The enthusiasm of the sporting public was as keen as ever for the second days races Early in the morning tbe streets were filled with visitors arriving by the various trains. The special from Wellington also added considerably to the number. The weather was fine, but unfortunately a cold'wmd was blowing throughout the day which made matters somewhat uncomfortable. However, the ground under foot was dry. Tbe course was slightly heavy in the early part of tbe day, but im proved as the meeting advanced. Tbe speculations were good and like wise the majority of the dividends. The local horse, Apiti, topped the score in the Rongotea Hack Hurdles, paying £17 4s. Tbe figures are very creditable when taking into consid eration tbe unfavourable weather for the first day. Tbe total investments for tbe day amounted to £10,991 making a grand total for the two days of £21,600 which shows a de crease of £750 upon the correspond ing meeting last year. The Feilding Band were present throughout the meeting, and enlivened the proceedings with some excellent music Fortunately the meeting passed off without any serious accidents. W. Miller the rider of Valima in the Cheltenham Hurdles met with an accident from a fall at a hurdle in the race. He was taken to Trevena's boarding house and attended to by Dr Willis, who reports that he was severely shaken, and was suffering from a broken nose. When the barrier went up Stronghold and Hinurewa shot to the front and made the running to the bend but here Gawain improved his position. The field were well together until entering the straight when Mereshot who held a good position throughout came away and finishing strongly, won by two lengths, Flotilla a neck away third. The field got well away but tbe line was soon broken by Auratus and Submarine who were in the lead past the stand. They field were well together when the straight was reached, and a fine finish resulted in Armistice winning by half a length, the same distance between second and third. Time, 2min 17 2 ssec. From a good start Kohonui and Valima led the field over the first hurdle, but at the second Valima came down. Kohonui was still in the lead passing the stand for the first time, with Handsome Hose, Repulse, Pushful and Waiwera following in that order. At the six furlong post Waiwera shot to the front and led along the back till the half mile post was reached, where the field closed up. At the bend Pushful and Repulse came through, and by the time the straight was reached had the race to themselves, the former winning by two lengths; Kobonui four lengths away. Time, 3min 32sec. Tnis proved one of the best events of the day. Wild Cat was first away, followed by Apiti. This was the order till the back of the course where Wild Cat fell away beaten, and Cassiopea, Apiti, and Florio were at the head of tbe field, Sleepwell lying handy. <>n entering the straight Apiti shot to tbe front, followed by Sleepwell and Cassiopea, with Flanagan coming fast from the rear. After a good set-to down the straight, the locally-owned Apiti won by a long neck ; Flanagan two lengths away. Time, 2min 59nec. Divs, Ll7 4s and 18s, Toto, L 1862. From a Rood start Hatley led a bunched field past tho stand the first time. At the seven furlong post Hatley was still in tbe van, with Tantoru next, and then came Electric Gun and Snip in olose proximity, the remainder of the field well together. On reaching the railway bend Electric Gun and Snip began to tire, and Boarasque «oa Barca could be seen overhauling Hatley fast. Half way down the straight Bourrasque had Hatley in trouble, and coming on won easily; Barca three lengths away. Time! 2min 4 4 ssec. Divs, l/i 2s end L 4 is. Mussell 7.11, 183 King's Birthday 77. When the barrier rose, King's Birthday and Flamen were the first to leave the mark; Mussell being left badly. This order was maintained to the railway bend where Royal Blue, Assayer, St Albert and Wind began to improve their posi tions, with Mussel coming fast. On entering the straight Wind, St Albert and Ropa fought out a good finish, the former winning by half a length, St Albert a length and a half away. Time, lmin 35sec. Divs, L 7 2s and L 2 12s.
