The battleship Albion collided with and rammed the battleship Duncan's stern at Lerwick, causing considerable damage. New York, October 8. Leonard is the name of the broker's clerk who forged the securities. He declares he committed the robbery for a bet in order to show how easy it was to outwit the safeguards of the New York Bank. He posted L 60--,-000 worth of securities to the owners, and the remainder was found intact in his rooms. He intended to return the whole, and he claims to be a public benefactor and not a criminal. v Suez, Oct. 8.
There are 80 ships at Suez awaiting the reopening of the canal. The homeward Brindisi mails are sent through the canal by tug. Sydney, October 8.
At the meeting of the Land Commission Peter Close gave further details of the decision of fees with Crick and Willis. He submitted a list of cases passed through the Lands Department. The total fees received were L 16.000, whereof Crick got LSBOO and Willis over L4OOO. The first children's court under the Neglected Children's Act with the object of removing juvenile offenders from the surroundings of the Police Court was held at Ormond Bouse, when several boys were charged with breaking into a residence and stealing money. After the hearing of the case the boys were locked in a dormitory pending the decision of the Magistrate. They escaped by a fanlight, playing havoc to the furniture in a dormitory before leaving. They were re-arrested whilst playing in the street.
