August '22 Sir John l'tne.-t, Fedeial Treasurer, delivered his Budget this afternoon, The revenue is L 11,460,000. j Tbe Customs and Excise yielded ! LIBO,OOO above the estimate, and tbe Tost Office L7U.000 more. The ! total revenue exceeded the estimate by L 72.000. fciimulants aud narcotics yielded L 4,281,000. The actual expenditure amounted to L4,3] 8,000, being LI 11,000 below the estimate. The estimated rev j enue for the current year is Ll 1,387, | 000 and the expenditure L4,G06,000. The cost of the fedeiatiou last, year was Is 6£d per bead, and the estimate for next year 18 Is s^d. The | revenue returned to the States amounted to L 7,141,000, and the estimated return for next year is L 6,788,000. August 2JJ. In tbe Budget Sir John Forrest said he hoped before long to bring the negotiations to transfer the state debts to the Commonwealth to a successful conclusion. Australia's trade last year was L 94,500,000. The imports were 87 million and the exports 57 million ; 74 per cent of the total trade was done with the United Kingdom and British possessions. Tbe proposed expenditure includes LBO.OOO for a telephone between Melbourne and ; Sydney, and LIIO,OOO epeciul dofence material. Tbe debate was adjourned.
