Canterbury v. Southland.

Invercargill, August 23. The Canterbury v. Southland football match was played to-day in fine weather. Snow fell in the early morning but had disappeared from the field of play which was in good order, there having been no rain for weeks. Within a few minutes of the start Canterbury got a goal from a mark which was the only score made. The teams were evenly matched and the game was very interesting. Burns marked thrice in the first five minutes within range of the Southland goal, Fraser being successful with the kick on the third occasion. At Palmerston yesterday Manawatu defeated the Bush Union by 20 to 8. The Manawatu— Wairarapa match will be played at Mcsterton on 10th September. The Rev C. C. Harper, of Palmerston, has been appointed referee for the Auckland-Wanganui match, also for the game Australia v Manawatu, Hawke's Bay, and Bush Unions combined, which will be played at Palmerston on September 6th. The following team will represent Manawatu against Hawke's Bay, at Palmerston, on Saturday :— Skelly, Baker, Fume, Scott, Kinzett, Stalker, Ongley, Johnston, P. McMinn, G.
