Sir A, Svrettenham, in aletter to the Timeß, replying to Mr Copeland's condemnation of his previous statement, says : "My statements regarding the aborigines of Australia is a matter of common knowledge, which I ney_er before heard questioned. They have not migrated, but have unaccountably disappeared, very few being left. Respecting the charge that the Australians disallowed shipwrecked Malays to land, I relied upon the statement of the captain of the recently wrecked steamer Petriaria." Reforms in Macedonia. Constantinople, March 6. The Porte recently appointed General Digiorgis, of the Italian army, commandant of the Macedonian gendarmerie. The Porte has now rejaoted his gendarmerie reorganisation scheme, and particularly objects to the appointment of foreign subaltern officers throughout the villayets. A Domestic Tragedy. London, March 4. ; A painful tragedy has occurred at Limburg. Josephine Littich, a widower, in order to prevent a long illness, shot dead her younger sister, who was suffering from an incurable disease. The evidence showed that the murderess was greatly attached to her victim, who gave her all the fortune she possessed. Titular Distinctions. London, March 6. Lord Northcote has been created a Knight of Grace, and Lady Northcote a Lady of Grace of the order of St. John of Jerusalem.
