Early in the morning a misty rain fell, bat at noon the wicket was perfect. ■ It was decided to replace Gregory by Gehre, of South Australia. The English team was the same as in Bydney. Noble won the toss and sent Tramper and Duff to bat. After a few strokes Duff attempted to drag Braund to leg and was bowled. • . , Hill came nest. At 27 Brannd gave place to Rhodes, off whose first over Trumper scored three boundary hits. When Hill had scored 16 he fell a victim to Rhodes, Braund taking a catch in the slips. Noble came next, and the batting livened op, despite a rapid change of bowlers, Arnold, Rhodes, Braund, Hint, and Bosanquet being tried. When he had scored 88 in faultlass and brilliant style, Tramper returned one to Braund. He was at the wiokets for 110 minutes, and hit llfourers. Noble fell a victim to Arnold shortly afterwards when he had made 29. McAliater and Gehrs became associated, but Gehre made a poor display, and was out for 8. Hopkins followed, and the liveliest cricket of the day was witnessed, Hopkins hitting Bosanquet for two fivers. - Hopkins had made 82 in 20 minutes whan he fell a victim to Braund. With McAlister's dismissal for 86, the wickets fell rapidly, Trumble, McLeod, and Goiter shaping poorly. The Australians made 247, and were at the wickets for Bhre 21minB. The commencement of the Englishmen's innings was sensational indeed, Noble taking two wickets with lacoessive balls in the first over without a run being scored. The victims were Harward *»d Arnold.
