The Auckland Star, in a recent issue, says: — "Our pioneer friend, Captain Jackson Barry, a colonial of seventy-five years, is once more in evidence, canvassing for his new book, which is now in the hands of the printers. The Captain is a wonder at his age, eighty-four years. To stand the fatigue he does is surprising. The veteran had one of his legs broken two years ago at New Plymouth, when saving a lady from being run over by a train, and was under the doctor for about sixteen months. He is, however, able to get about, and has so far been very successful in getting orders. The Captain can well claim to be one of the founders of three great British colonies, for he was in Melbourne in 1825, and stood where Queen Street, Auckland, now is, in 1837, when it was a fern-clad gully, with not a vestige of a white man's dwelling or a white man's face to be seen, and about that time also was at Port Essington, New South Wales, where he took cattle for the new settlement established there. He was also in New Plymouth when Mr F. Carring. ton, who was laying off that town in 1842, had to take shelter in Dickie Barrett's whare, as he was stopped and threatened by the natives. Several Auckland and southern friends have read the manuscript of his new book, and they declare it will be one of the most interesting volumes ever published in the colonies. Photographs of no fewer than eighty leading men of the colonies, including four Governors, and short autobiographies of each, and of Lord Ranfurly, Gover nor of New Zealand, will appear, and photographs of the Hon R. Seddon, Premier, and His Ministry, and Premiers and members of earlier Ministries." The publishers, " The Brett Publishing Company," of Auckland, intimate that the first edition will be ready for issue early in January. Cools the Blood Hot weather takes the life out of. everybody.
