BIBLE-READING IN SCHOOLS

Telegraph. Press Association. Copyright Oamaru, June 10. A plebiscite has just been taken of the electors in Oamaru electorate on the question of bible-reading in schools. Voting papers were distributed and collected by workers in connection with all the churches in the electorate. 2637 persona voted in favour and 137 against, while 85 declined to state their opinion. The number on tbe roll at the last election was 4080. Actually 68 per cent of the roll voted in favour of Biblereading. The Oamaru Presbytery, as the General Assembly Committee on Bible-reading in schools, to-day resolved that after the result of this plebiscite they strongly recommend that similar plebiscites be taken throughout the colony, and if similar results are obtained' that in every electorate the question be made a test at next election. The vote, it was stated, was taken with care. The large number of abstinents from voting was due in part to only one adult in each house signing.
