A, ANOTHER WAR OFFICE MISTAKE, Woman's Letter from her " Dead " Husband. The military authorities have once more reported the death of a soldier afterwards found to he alive. An incident of this kind has occurred very recently in the case of a youug man named Lancaster, who, when a stallholder in Smithfield Market, Manchester,, .joined the Imperial Yeomanry, about nine months ago, and proceeded to South Africa, leaviDg his wife to carry on the business. From time to time Mr Lancaster received letters from her husband, but towards the end of March she re- } ceived an ominous-looking communication from the War Office to say that Private Lancashire had died, from J enteric at Krdonstad. The bereaved woman went into mourning, had memorial cards printed, and in due course drew the "club" money. The Wav Offica made the usual inquiries through the police as to the woman's character, and these being to the satisfaction of the authorities, Mrs Lancaster would, in course of time, have received a pension as a soldier's widow. Instead of a pension, however, she received something of a very different nature — a letter from the husband, who was supposed to be dead. Greatly agitated, she at once communicated with the War Office, and in reply received j a letter in which it was stated that that they had no doubt there was a mistake, and that her husband was alive. An effort is now being made j to secure satisfactory confirmation of what to Mrs Lancaster should be very good news indeed.
