The Feilding Star. Oreua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. FRIDAY, MAY 2, 1902 A TRAITOR.

The following particulars of the arch- traitor Colonel von Grimm, who has been convicted of the crime oi selling certain Russian military plans of mobilisation to the Germans, ' should prove interesting. He is not a Russian by birth but a German from the Baltic Provinces, we learn from the Army and Navy Gazette) belonging, however, to the Orthodox faith. Entering the Russian army he gained the confidence of the mili--1 tary authorities, which he has abused. It is reported that he has made a full confession, and tbat several oi his brother officers and some ladies of Warsaw, have been arrested foi complicity in his offence. The Aus- • trians point out that tne Russians - have practised similar espionage in ; Galicia, and that Austrian plans have been carried over the frontier bj treacherous Austrian officers. The ) practice is not uncommon on the i Continent, and many instances of it have come to public notice. In the • case of Colonel von Grimm, it is 1 stated that General Europatkine noticed that the Germans systematically stationed two regiments at each ol the frontier posts which, according ' to the Russian mobilisation plan, ■> were selected for a concentration ol troops in the event of war. He soon • became convinced that the plans were 1 known, and at length the traitor was discovered. One report is that Col von Grimm is merely a tool of officers more highly placed. It is now rei ported that the Czar has ordered the whole scheme of mobilisation in the military district of Warsaw to be re- » cast. The misfortune of such an 3 arrangement is that, presumably, the 1 previous arrangement was considered - the best, and that schemes of operations in the same district cannot be multiplied with advantage. On al least one occasion Napoleon, believing that his plans against England had been divulged, ordered a fresh scheme ' to be drawn up, but there is obviously c a difficulty in all such cases.
