THE DISASTER TO THE EIGHTH.
When the news reached Feilding yesterday morning that a number of the members of the Eighth Regiment of New Zealanders had been killed and seriously wounded by a railway accident when being conveyed to the front in South Africa, there was much dread and anxiety amongst those who have friends and relations in that Contingent. Later in the day full details were received and published as to the names of those who had perished or been injured, so that the minds of those whose friends had escaped were set at rest. We deeply sympathise with those who have suffered, and with their sorrowing relatives. Had the poor fellows fallen on the field of battle with their faces to the foe, the regret would not have been so keen, for then they would have died doing their duty to the Empire. However, their memory will not be less honored by their sympathising fellow countrymen because they met their fate in a way so cruel and so unexpected.
