«. . Telegraph Press Association. Copyright Dunedin, April 15. At the statutory meeting of the Dock Trust, Mr E. G. Allen, M.H.R., chairman, said the net profit on the year's operations was £1941. The revenue from vessels docked was £2419, andlhe expenses in connection with the docking £2490, leaving a loss on the working of the dock itself. Mr Allen, member for Waikouaiti, addressed the electors at Port Chalmers to-night, and received a vote of thanks. He advised the Farmers' Union to leave politics alone, and referred to the benefit conferred on farmers by the establishment of the Agricultural Department. As showing what British ships have to compete against, it may be atated that the steamer Germanicus, which came here from New York and loaded oats for South Africa, can carry about 7000 tons of cargo, and has a crew of 22 all told. The captain receives only £14 a month, the first mate £7, and the men only £2 5s each. Bank of New Zealand shares have hardened, in consequence of the announcement of a 5 per cent, dividend. There were buyers at 58s, but sellers asked 70s. Napier, April 15. Mr H. P. Cohen, for many years a member of the Borough Council, has acceded to a numerously-signed requisition asking him to contest the Mayoralty. The candidates likely to be nominated are Mr Cohen, and Mr S. Carnell, formerly M.H.R. for Napier, and the contest between the two will probably be close. The Napier Harbour Board at their meeting to day, resolved to reduce the haulage charges on goods landed at the breakwater to ninepence per ton. Auckland, April 15. H.M.S. Royal Arthur and Ringarooma leave for the Bay of Islands to-morrow, and then go on to Sydney. The Mildura proceeds to Sydney direct, returning to New Zealand by way of Fiji. The Governor and Lady Ranfurly gave a ball to-night in honour of Admiral Beaumont and the officers of the fleet now in port. There were a large number of guests at the gathering, which was one of the most brilliant held at Government House. Mr M. Niccol, secretary of the New Zealand Grand Lodge, who is leaving for Wellington, was presented with an address and a silver tea and coffee service by the Harbour Board. Mr Niccol has been a member of the Board continuously for 25 years, and several times chairman. The scows Hercules and Hauturu were in collision off Port Rodney on Sunday. The Hercules had a hole knocked in her bow above the waterline, and the Hauturu had her bowsprit and cathead carried away. The Collector of Customs will hold an inquiry. Shares in the Bank of New Zealand are now wanted at 595, but no selling price was quoted to-day. This is the outcome of the satisfactory progress made by the bank during the year. This Day. The body of Johnston, chief engineer of the Herald, missing yesterday, was found in Manakau Harbour. Wellington, This Day. H.M.S, Phoebe arrived from the Chathams. Mr Aitkan has been re-elected unopposed as Mayor of Wellington. Nelson, April 15. Captain Walker, a very old settler, and one who was engaged in the local coasting trade from the early days, died to-day. Hokitika, April 15. The annual meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society was held this evening. The annual report of the Curator of the Kanieri Lake hatchery, and the President showed that excellent work was being done, and it is confidently expected that in a few years the Westland streams will furnish very prolific trout fishing. The Rev. Hawkins was elected President for the ensuing year. Carterton, This Day. MrJHornsby M.H.8., addressed bis constituents last night and received a vote of confidence.
