Aviti Notes.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ! Bush fires have been the order of the clay in Apiti lately, and those who have been fortunate enough to sow their burns with rape or turnips will rub their hands at the heavy showers we have had lately. Most of the burns have been very good. ; The haymakers and grass seeders ; will hardly be so jubilant, though a good many have harvested their hay. j The hay crop has not been heavy but \ a good deal has been cut. No doubt many think we can hardly hope for a winter as fine as the last two have been, and it is to be noticed that very little hay has been left over from last year. The grass seed must suffer by the heavy rains as a lot of ifc will be laid low. Considering the low prices ruling there will be a lot cut in. Apiti this year. The contemplated tours of the Noxious Weed Inspector and the Stockyard Inspector will stir up some people though it is not yet known whether Apiti willjbe visited. There is a tall ugly looking thistle getting a bit prevalent that is not shown in any oj the leaflets for farmers. The ladies of Kiwitea and Kimbolton organised a picnic to the Apiti bridge on Thursday, inviting a number of the Apitiites and in spite of the unpropitious looking day. there was a good muster and everyone spent a good time. The day was finished up by a social in the Kimbolton Hall. Some people think that the climate in the Southern Hemisphere follows what has been* in the Northern: It certainly has done so lately but is probably only a coincidence. Why should not the Northern follow the Southern? If our next winter is to follow on what they are having in Europe we can expect a chilly time of it.
